Based on research by F. C. Williams into cathode ray tubes, the electro-static tube or "Williams Tube" was used as a storage device for many early computers. An electron beam was used to scan a CRT screen and generate a dot (for 0) or a dash (for 1), for example. The Williams Tube was a low capacity, relatively high speed storage device. They were usually used in parallel.
